This Japanese Nagura stone is used in conjunction with a hone to create a milky liquid called a slurry which makes the hone cut finer thus creating a finer polish on the razor's edge. It is also used to condition waterstones during use, wearing away hard particles or contamination in the waterstone, and to selectively allow flattening by being rubbed on high spots on the stone.
