Aaron is asked a question about preventing razor bumps, spots and ingrowing hairs

Raj Bisht, from the UK, asks:

“Hi my name is Raj and I have a few questions I would like to ask:

Question 1.) Sometimes I get bumps on my face which you can’t see. What’s the cause of this?

Question 2.) When I start to grow a 3-4 day stubble at times I get ingrowing spots. What’s the cause of this?

Question 3.) After my shave I want a product which won’t leave my face looking oily, and when I touch it, it won’t be slippery. What do you recommend?

Question 4.) Finally, what’s the best way to shave. On the neck I shave upwards and on the cheek area I stroke downwards and also at an angle.”

AARON SAYS

“Mr. Bisht,

I cannot say for certain what is causing your bumps, or in grown hairs, but have a few ideas which may help! First, map which way your hair is growing and follow the pattern of growth as much as you can, this should eliminate going against the direction of growth which can cause bumps. Your growth pattern will most likely be different than a simple N.S.E.W. shaving pattern.

Second, you should consider using a facial scrub 2-3 times a week to help eliminate and relieve bumps and the trapped hairs that cause them.

Third, use a single edge razor such as the Merkur 34c, Bluebeard’s Scimitar, or Edwin Jagger DE89. Using multiple blade contraptions increase the chance of getting in grown hairs significantly.

Lastly, for your post shave routine use a light balm such as Proraso, Bluebeard’s Revenge, Taylor of Old Bond Street, or an alcohol based splash/lotion. A toner or simple witch hazel solution may be a better route for you. Experiment a little and find out what best works for you skin. Following these steps should send you in the right direction for a much more comfortable shave!

Happy Shaving!

Aaron”
