Review: Bought this as my first DE razor and am delighted with it.
Shave 1 - one pass, setting 2 - comfortable but not very close at all.
Shave 2 - two passes, 2 and 2.5 - getting there
Shave 3 - two passes 2.5 and 3 - pretty much as close as my old cartridge on a good day
Subsequent shaves - three passes 3/3.5/4 - really nice smooth shave with zero ingrowing hairs, and surprisingly nick/cut free.
Would recommend to anyone.

Product: Merkur Plastic Travel Case
Review: I bought this at the same time as my Progress. The Progress just fits (very snug) which is great as it does not rattle around inside. There is space provided for two packs of blades (careful though not all razor packs fit 10 blade Feathers do not, most others I tried did fit).
The plastic is very rigid so I do not know how well it will stand up to airport baggage handlers loading techniques. I would suggest care be taken in finding a padded place in your luggage if you are taking it on a plane trip.
All in all though a great case which fits all the short handled Merkurs and accommodates all the blades you will need while yau are away.
Review: I have a Futur and a 1904 for travelling. Reading review after review about how good the Progress was I decided I would buy one and try it.
It is smaller than the Futur but carries a nice head weight and the manufacturing finish was very good indeed. I was drawn to the head shape, it looks very clean without the blade retaining pins being visible underneath.
My first shave was a revelation! It shaved impressively close on setting 2 but without me having to maneuver the bulk of the Futur, especially under the nose it felt effortless!
Blade replacement/removal is a dream (compared to the push off Futur), unscrew using the plastic handle end cap pull the top and blade off and the reverse to put it all back together again. Very little chance of cut fingers there.
I have yet to dial this razor in properly and find my most confortable setting but my first experiences have all been positive. I cannot find fault at all!

Product: DR Harris Arlington Shaving Soap & Bowl Beech (100g)
Review: The Arlington soap from D.R. Harris is one of my favourites ever. It produces a lot of lather even with softer brushes, and lets your razor glide across your face smoothly. The smell is quite strong (light citrus and fern with a clean soap undertone) but after shaving it won't interfere with any aftershave you're planning on using.
The price might be a tad steep to potential buyers, but this tripple milled puck should last daily users about a year, so definitely worth it.

Product: Merkur 37C Slant Bar DE Safety Razor
Review: This is my first high quality razor. Comparing it to the 2 Chinese made rubbish I used so far, it is a dream come true. Not a single cut, no razor burns no irritation what so ever. I took it to a 3 day stubble and in just 3 passes it took it all off -- BBS. So far I have only used the Israeli made bonus blades but I don't think it will be a disappointment when I switch to the feathers. Michells wool fat soap goes great with this razor.

Review: I've been using these for a fortnight now in my Merkur 38c and have stopped wondering which blades to use. I was slightly apprehensive because of their much-vaunted sharpness but, now that I'm more relaxed about them, I'm routinely getting no nicks at all. 1-2 passes give an excellent fuss-free close shave. Slightly more expensive than the others but most definitely worth it.
Review: Good... but careful..
i was looking for a new engineered razor. i bought this razor and started used...at first impressed by the heavyness.. but then learned that can be the best friend to shave without apply any pressure to the razor. amazing shave, no doubt but... sometimes too close.. it's somehow aggressive compaired to other razors as merkur hd or progress. anyway after you learn how to use properly, it give to you one of the most close shave ever. the price here is amazing and after several use it looks like the first day. in other words a razor that will resist trough time .

Review: Great value for money! Smooth shave and longevity. I have a fairly heavy beard and use pre-shave oil and Taylors Shave Cream to try and smooth the way. I found Merkur, Israeli and Wiklinson Sword all pulled a bit despite my preparation. The Derby's do not! A lot smoother with less irritation. I use these in both my Futur and 1904. I have ordered some Feathers from Dan to try but they are going to have to be good to oust the Derby from being my blade of choice!

Review: Very good pre-shave cream.
I have used various different oils before, including the Taylor Of Old Bond Street Essential Oil which was expensive. This cream is a lot better, and you get the menthol 'burn' on your skin which really makes the beard hairs soft.
I no longer get shaving rash and this cream makes ever pass smooth, against and with the grain.

Product: Merkur 34C Heavy Duty Classic
Review: Shaving is not something I never look forward to. Ive always found problems with both electric and modern cartridge razors including ingrown hairs, razor burn etc. I had become resigned to the fact that this was just the way the world was until I did some further research on the internet. Many people suggested using a traditional safety razor such as the Merkur 34C. After using this razor for a week, with traditional shaving cream and a badger brush my response is simply this: Where have you been all my life?. Although shaving in this way takes a little longer (particularly for an inexperienced user like myself) the shave is pain free during and after and Im getting a closer shave than ever before. I no longer dread the morning shave, in fact, I rather look forward to it. Also the money saved on razor blades is really quite something!
The razor its self feels like a quality solid tactile instrument, which is something I have come to expect from German engineering. Im sure this will last me a lifetime!

Product: "Shogun" Luxury Onyx Super Badger Shaving Brush
Review: When I first saw this brush I knew that I just had to have one for my rotation. The overall virsual appearance and the notion of having a brush with a stone handle just appealed highly to me.
I have been using this brush for a while now, testing it with various creams and soaps. I must say; I have not been disppointed. Neither by the appearance nor the performance of this brush.
This brush is a good all-rounder. I have tested it with Proraso SC, Musgo Real SC, Omega SS and Mitchell's Wool Fat. No doubt this brush excels with creams, but it is no bad soap brush either. If I used hard soaps exclusively I would probably have gone after the "Zen", a pure badger version of the same brush. Generally this brush is a better than average performer; perfect for creams and good with soaps.
I had actually expected this brush to be a "special occasion" brush when I bought it, but I find myself reaching for it suprisingly often. This brush has more to it than good looks, it is also a solid performer and a bit of added luxury to the everyday life.

Product: Merkur 42C Chrome Plated "1904 Replica"
Review: I have just bought one of these. Why? I have a Merkur Futur (which I love!) but I wanted something a little smaller to put in my travel bag and after looking at what was available I chose a 1904. Merkur do make a functional Travel Razor which is more expensive but has the advantage that it reduces to fit into a very small pouch but I didnt feel I needed to go to that extreme! The 1904 razor has a lovely classic design, small handle and a nice weight which feels just right in the hand. It has great manoeuvrability and is small enough to get at those harder places (under the nose especially a trouble spot for me) easily. This may be at the cheaper end of the market but quality is not sacrificed, it is very well made in three solid, nickel plated parts all with a mirror like shine, and I think it will long outlast me! It gives a close shave but not an aggressive one and even those with sensitive skin should not have any trouble with the dreaded razor burn making it an ideal starter razor. Hard to believe the design is 105 years old! Things have not changed that much, have they? I use mine with Derby Extras and Taylors Shaving Cream, the ideal combination for my face. Buy it here, you will not find it cheaper! Even as a second razor, you will not be disappointed, your main Razor may even get relegated!

Review: I've been using this with excellent results for a fortnight now, having had it recommended last month by Sam Tellig in Stereophile magazine. The last time I used a safety razor was ~30 years ago - my late dad's! Since then, it's been various landfill-bound disposabes and cartridges. This is a whole other experience. Okay, it requires a bit more care and my shaving seems to have become somewhat more ritualised - I lather and heat everything up much more now - but the 38c works beautifully. It doesn't just feel good in the hand due to its weight, but it gives a much cleaner shave, even with just one with-the-grain pass. Highly recommended, then (by me, this time!), for novices and returnees.

Even though the Crabtree had a plessent sandalwood smell, it was no way as refreshing as this Taylors of Old Bond Street cream, with its warm traditional sent.
Also and more improtantly for me the lather on the Taylors, was so much better. Alot creamier lather that left my bristels alot softer, for a better shave.
Review: I bought one of these as a starting point to getting into straight razor shaving. For the money it's a fantastic deal. Review: Name the things you have owned for YEARS ? Not a lot I bet... well, this is a LIFETIME purchase !
A top quality piece of German steel that will outlive you !
Ive spend 30 years looking for this razor... and like ANY quality tool - it needs practice to achieve a decent job, but thats not to say you will bleed on the way... DE shaving isnt as hard as some folk make out, as long as you follow 2 rules:
1:DO NOT "press on" - guide it over you face only.
2: Make sure the blade is touching skin !
The last one sounds obvious, but there are 3 edges to drag along the face - ONLY the middle one is the blade.... its easy to get the angle wrong, and require lots of "passes" - which creates soreness.
You shave with your EARS - you will soon learn the "right sound" then it becomes automatic.
Once you have "mapped" your face, and get the angle right, its as easy as a cartridge razor, only closer.
Plan on spending a month or more to get the hang of it... and you will be rewarded with an excellent shave EVERY DAY.
Try different soaps and blades too - they are NOT all the same, and different folk need different combinations !
A "Rolls Royce" of a razor A+++

Review: Wow my face is alive!! Just applied this post shave and it feels amazing. It smells like Vicks Vaporub. My skin feels really cool and the sensation lasts for about 20 minutes. You've gotta try this!!
Review: Straight from the box this is quite an intimidating razor due to the size and weight you expect it to be quite a handful and it does not disappoint! I have been using it for a week and am now getting braver (but still respectful) with the adjustments and so far, touch wood have had no nicks or cuts. I now know that you need to work with the weight of the razor, pulling as you do with a lighter one does not work and would probably be a bit dangerous until you have been using it for a while. My shaves are getting closer and find my skin is not as irritated as it was with my four bladed quattro. Styling is what attracted me to the Futur, I think it is a true work of art. My only criticism would be the push off blade change which I find a little cumbersome for something that looks so good. All in all I love it and get the feeling that when I learn to use it properly I will love it even more!

Review: As a 22-year old starting my first real job in the City after graduating, I felt that the perennial nicks and razor bumps caused by my 'juvenile' shaving with a Mach 3 had to be banished for good. After a bit of searching on the net on how to get a better shave I came across the Shaving Shack and I haven't looked back since. The Merkur HD Classic is an excellent example of German engineering at its best. It's perfectly weighted which means no more pressing down on my face and thus no more hacking away at my skin. The knurling on the handle makes it easy to grip even with wet hands and the screw down design works perfectly. Although many say you have to be more careful with DE safety razors, I'd disagree to a certain extent. Although it does take more time to get an even shave (10mins as opposed to 2-3mins), I very rarely cut myself with this little beauty and razor bumps are a thing of the past. Although there are cheaper DE razors out there, if you are a first time entrant into the market I cannot recommend this model highly enough. Although the razor itself may seem expensive, in the long run with the low cost of DE blades it works out far cheaper than my Mach 3. Go on, spoil yourself!

The silvertip knot is soft and feels extremely soft and luxurious on you skin, but is still dense and stiff enough to exofoilate your skin efficiently.
The handle is beautifull and very ergonomic, it's weight is a perfect counterbalance to the knot.
I have tried the brush with both soaps and creams - I find the brush equally effective with both. I have heard claims that this is one of the easiest brushes to use, ever made - I know that it is the easiest lathering brush I have in my collection.

Review: After ten years of shaving with a two blades wilkinson, the TV ads for three, four, five (six next time ???) blades razors were the drop that breaks the camel's back. I decided to spare my money and to go back to more traditional shaving methods : safety razor and straight razor.
If the straight razor is the holy grail in shaving, I'm a beginner with it. More,I have to admit that the morning shave before going to work is often too hasty to consider using it. As a result, I looked for a safety razor, and I found a first class one with the Merkur Futur 760. It'a perfect shaving tool, giving me a smoother skin than my old wilkinson. More, after a ten years break of multiblade razor shaving, I managed to get not a single cut using it.
Finally, its a masterpiece of design, with smooth and pure lines, reminiscent of the Schneider Cup's seaplanes of the 1930'. To put it in one word : a must.

I have a Merkur 38C and these Japanese blades are the perfect partner for it. Add a Kent AP12 brush and some Mitchell's Wool Fat soap (available from the guys here!) and you will struggle to get a better shave, even if you go to a professional barber shop! Take your time using these Feather blades (30 minutes plus for a really careful. close shave!) and you will notice the difference. Rush it, and you will bleed...profusely! You have been warned!
Review: First things first, I love my Gillette "Fat boy 1960" & "slim 63" . They look great, hold their value & shave ok. Yet, there is a but & you will only realise why after you have used one of Merkurs exellent razors. Such an example is the Futur. The solid weight, teture & ballance all scream "Quality". Then of course comes the shave, so close with no nicks or soreness & you are feeling your face all day because it is so smooth. But there is something very special about the Futur that sets it apart from all other razors! It is the design & build. Come the nuclear war, my money is on the Futur being the only thing left standing. It is simply two pieces of machine mettled parts which are indestructable. The top part lifts of & sits back with the sort of satisfying clunk one gets when shutting a Jaguar car door. You know that blade is going nowhere. You get 12 settings which range from mild to Gods blood, you can not be serious setting. Its all so simple, yet shear class. As for my much loved Gillettes, yes i still love them but they adorn my bathroom for their asthetic value, whilst my hand always reaches for the Futur.

Review: If I should chose to keep only one shaving soap, this would be it! The lather produced by this soap is without comparison the most comfortable and effective I have experienced.
The scent is discreet, classic and appealing - and doesn't interfere with your afterhave/cologne.
If considering whether to get this soap with or without the ceramic bowl, I say; get the bowl. Not only is it practical it is also classy and good looking, I wish more shaving soaps came ind bowls like this.
If you haven't yet tried this soap you are definitly missing out.
Review: This Merkur is my first DE safety razor after shaving with Gilette Mach3 Turbo for years. Definitely an improvement. Much smoother shave, less irritation. Still experimenting with the setting of the razor. Together with other items swiftly delivered to my home address in The Netherlands. Even overseas buyers buy from the Shaving Shack!
Review: This is my first toe dip into the world of DE shaving!!! This piece of kit is literally all you will ever need-the adjustability of it makes it so flexible and adaptable to your face/style and level of shaving!
I ordered on a wednesday and had it arrive at my door on friday and i live in Ireland!! Even irish companies can't get delivery that fast.
Dan at the shack really does know his stuff and really does give sound advice.
In the month I've had this razor I've already saved 22euro on not having to buy Mach thr blades! Thats pretty much 2/3 of what this cost me!! in two months I'll practically be saving money :)
If you're even considering trying DE shaving out-you will not be disappointed with this razor! It looks and feels amazing, never fails to get a conversation from friends when they see you shave with it!
Review: After reading a number of websites I decided to go with the progress, its a great value razor and it performs really good and I find it just the right weight although some people dislike the top heavy feel.
As well as this it also gives a very close shave when used with the right razor blade and beats any Fusion or Mach3 razor hands down.
This also comes in a nice clear plastic display box which is handy for storage or travel as it can store upto two boxes of blades.
Tom's Comment: Thanks for the review, just a note to say the plastic box is now a separate item.

Product: 10 Feather & 10 Derby Extra & 10 Israeli Made Double Edged Razor Blades
Review: I ordered this sample pack together with my Merkur Futur. It is very useful to try different blades when you acquire a new razor, because each razor seems to require different degrees of smoothness and/or sharpness.
In my case, I have discovered that the Israeli Shaving Shack blades are perfect for the Futur (adjusted around 3) and I will order them again in the near future.
Review: This razor is perfect for my skin. I was using a light DE razor before this, but I have discovered that with an heavier razor such as the Futur it is much easier to avoid any pressure and to keep a consistent angle throughout each pass.
I am going to get rid of any other razor I own and to bring this beast around also for travels.
Just be careful with the adjustability, adjust gradually and consider that different blades can require a different setting.

Review: Treat these blades with care and you will get the smoothest and most comfortable shave in you life. For me they provide a good 5 to 6 shaves easy, properly more but I don't want to push my luck. At 2.99 they me be more expensive than the competition, but i bet you would not regret it. Review: I was unsure at first as to the quality of the razor or whether or not it would improve over a modern 3+ blade cartridge razor. Well let me tell you don't hesitate in buying one!
The Merkur 34C is a well finished and strongly built razor which handles effortlessly and is well balanced. It has over the last few months provided many first class shaves. I now fully believe that with the right blade, soap (or cream), brush and the Merkur 34C you can get better, closer and more enjoyable shaves.
One other thing, this may be a "old style" razor but it performs better than any modern alternative. Dont let it's style put you off whether you are young or old, Im in my 20's and now proud to be a DE shaver. Thank you Shaving Shack for helping me improve my Shave.

Review: After trying disposable, cartridge and electric razors, i still had quite frequent flare ups of razor burn and ingrown hairs on account of my extremely sensitive skin. After doing some research on DE razors I decided to go for the Merkur 34C because it was a good choice for a beginner. Immediately noticed the shaving rash clearing up and my face feels much softer and less irritated after shaving. It is far less irritating using 1 extremely sharp blade than it is to use the double, triple etc blade cartridges they have out today, and also far less costly. Definitley worth the try if your skin is sensitive, the shaving experience is much better and more comfortable!

Review: I phoned before I placed the order and got indepth brief on what I should be going for and for what reason. Very knowledgeable indeed. Anyway went ahead with Merkur 38C based on suggestions and also on review from this & other website(shaving shack is definitely the cheapest for sure!). Had my first shave and even though this is my first time with a single blade it proved to be a great success. No nicks and clean smooth result! What is even more amazing is that the skin is totally moist and no bumps or red blotches/marks and no irritations. Had to wait till I was 32 to discover this. Merkur is slightly on the heavy side but boy once you get to use it you would never go back to multi blade system. Cost wise it is a investment well made. Perhaps few videos on the website for freshers would be much useful!!!

Kudos to the Shaving Shack for delivering within 2 days as well!
Review: I bought this soap as I have very sensitive skin, and this soap, due to its lanolin content is good for the skin and has a high moisturising ability. I have used 4 other shave soaps and a couple of creams. Out of them all, this one is my favourite, and it looks like it will last for ages. It lathers really well (even with hard water), softens the skin, gives excellent glide, smells pleasant. I would recommend it without any hesitation!
Review: I decided to try the Progress after 10 months or so using my other Merkur razor. I really like my other razor, but I found it just a little too aggressive for my skin. I have sensitive skin and a thick beard. I chatted with Dan at Shaving Shack, who was very helpful, and he suggested two options. One was the Progress, and the other the Slant bar. I went for the Progress as I wanted the to be able to adjust the blade exposure to my skin. It arrived 1.5 days later. After two weeks of using the Progress I am very happy wit it! The build quality is excellent. Unlike my other Merkur, the Progress is a little heavier and has a little more weight in the head. This I really like. The shape of the head makes it very easy to shave in those awkward places. The razor gives me excellent shaves, and my razor burn, irritation and ingrowing hairs are gone. I would recommend this razor to anyone. There are quarks to it though, but you can find these out on the internet Forums, like Badger and Blade. I also bought Derby blades and Mitchell's wool Fat Shaving Soap. I will write reviews of these two also. Needless to say, the combination is good for me.

Product: Truefitt & Hill Sandalwood Shaving Cream Bowl (190g)
Review: I tried this cream after having tried the Taylor of Old Bond Street's Sandalwood.
This one has a more subtle scent, less "synthetic", if I can describe it like that,
but also less intense.
The texture itself is more creamy, less solid than the TOBS variety, and it lathers up
very well.
I like the TOBS Sandalwood very much - but this one seems to have a slight edge
over it - a more subtle, slightly more natural scent, almost sweeter, with excellent
latherability. In the end, it's a matter of personal preference, but they are both
excellent shaving creams !
Review: I was expecting these blades to be sharp but they surpassed all my expectations. I had probably the closest and smoothest shave with the least amount of strokes ever. It was hot knife through butter stuff. I didnt cut myself once and it tackled the sensitive neck area extremeley well. I had a little trouble with the butterfly mechanism on the razor, one of the 'wings' kept popping out, but pushed it back into place and carried on.
Using the brush and proper shaving cream is probably the biggest plus, smells and feels good and a little goes a long way.

Product: Shaving Shack Hand Made Natural Shaving Soap (110g)
Review: I used this soap along with a Parker 90R I bought from the Shaving Shack. It has been ideal for my sensitive skin and I don't get a rash when I use it, unlike some soaps and creams I've used before. Although it is quick to produce lather, it disappears quite quickly. However, as another reviewer has pointed out, it does leave a clear layer that is slick and produces a good shave that leaves the skin moisturised.
Review: I'm 24YO and lately my beard really started to grow with a manly pace/texture, so my few years old Philips electric shaver just wasn't cutting it anymore.
I actually started to look online for a new electric shaver but so i discovered, that wet shaving gives better results. I don't know how i stumbled on safety razors but boy am i glad i did. The Merkur 570 Progress got great reviews so i gave it a try.
It gives you a great shave and you don't have to be afraid of cutting yourself. I'm basically a shaving noob and i don't have problems shaving with it. I did cut myself a little a few times but that's because i really wasn't taking it slow. Before Merkur arrived i bought a Wilkinson sword quattro titanium 4-blade miracle (MACH3 plastic fantastic alike) and was really dissapointed with the result. I also cut myself more with it than with the Merkur (it went straight to the trash along with the extra blade).
It's fun to experiment with the settings. I can shave with level 1 but usually i set it from 1.5-2.5, i usually use 1 on the area under the nose/above the lip, otherwise it's to rough for me.
I wouldn't mind the handle being a bit longer.
The blades are cheap, the shave is great so do i don't really understand why they don't sell this in stores?!
I got 30 free israeli blades with this order. I find them just as good or even better than Merkur platinum blades. Shipping to Slovenia was fast with royal mail and the price 29.99 pounds is awesome, especially with todays pound= conversion rate. Cheaper than buying from Germany.
CONCLUSION: buy it and throw the MACH-3 marvels in the trash can, where they belong!
Regards from Slovenia.

Review: An excellent cream that produces a thick creamy lather with a really fresh scent. If you feel it's too thick, add more water - just like with any cream, each one is different. I heard some people compare this to the Body Shop shaving cream but they are very different in scent - this one almost smells like fresh cucumber to me - it's really nice, and much easier on my skin than the sandalwood version (which although I love the scent and lather, smells a little more artificial due to the added perfume). For people with sensitive skin, this is really better than most of the perfumed creams from Taylor and it lasts forever, making it a really good buy!

Product: Merkur 39C Slant Bar DE Long Handled Safety Razor
Review: I have left it half a dozen shaves before adding this review. I bought this as it is recommended not just for thick growth (which mine is not particularly) but also for sensitive skin. What a lovely shave / great razor!! It actually looks daunting and as if it would take the side of your head off but, with the usual care and attention, it doesn't.
I have moved to this from the 34c and would give this the edge. Although I have small hands, I find the longer handle and extra weight are just right and are easier to use than the 34c. The only complaint was a few nicks with the last shave but that was down to me trying to get an extra shave from the blade rather than the fault of the razor. I find Derby blades are great with this razor. Haven't tried a feather yet!!.
Highly recommended and excellent quality.
Enjoy!!

Review: I have just had a truly rewarding shave with this wonderful shaving cream. You just need an almond size amount with this stuff and your shaving brush will explode with copious amounts of fluffy white lather. The lather produced was very slick making my DE razor glide effortlessly. The scent of this cream is great and it should be, as real sandal wood oil is part of its ingredients. Also the scent lingers for quite a while, much to my girlfriend's delight who described it as "very sexy". I wonder if I can get hold of some aftershave to accompany this shaving cream?
