The sad (depending on how you look at it) truth about getting into real wet shaving is that you need to try out many brands of blades before you find your personal favourite. Your skin type, sensitivity, method, products and hair type all play a part which is why I’ve always told friends who are beginners and ask for advice that everyone really needs to go the hard way and try them all for themselves in order to find their favourites.
Having said this it is in fact still a good idea to read reviews in order to get a sense of the quality and general characteristics of different blades.
And yes, there is a huge difference between different blades.
I personally think that the Sharks are some of the best beginner blades. These are quality blades that are sharp enough to give you a tug-less shave while at the same time being more forgiving than say “Feathers”. Perfect for building up the confidence needed to try out even sharper siblings… or you could find that you’ll go with these forever. It’s your call!
Mr David Cunniffe –
After seeing so many good reviews for these blades I thought I’d give them a try. I’ve tried them in a Merkur 37c and a Muhle R41 and I’m not impressed. They are not sharp and far from smooth, a tug every stroke of the razor. I’ll go back to my usual Astra SP or Voskhods
Paul Heron –
After trying out several blades over the past year and a bit. I decided that the Shark blades should be a regular part of my shaving arsenal. On finding them on this excellent website at 100 for GBP13.99, I had no hesitation in placing an order. So with 10 of these blades added as a free gift, I now have just over two years of enjoyable shaving for under 15 quid. Not only that but they arrived quicker than I expected. Which was very pleasing.
As for the blades themselves. I find that I get a very close and comfortable shave, with no irritation or soreness. I have very tough stubble on parts of my neck but shaving is now a breeze. I’m also very impressed with the packaging. The little shark picture always makes me smile.
Henrik Fredriksson –
If you like Astras, Gillettes Yellow you are in for a treat. VERY SMOOTH and sharp. Higly recommended. I am so pleased that these superb blades finally have entered the Shaving Shack shop. Last comment, the package with the shark makes me smile every time. Very cool.
Peter Edwards –
As I’ve been learning, all beards, and blades are different. Using a Muhle R89 these blades just aren’t for me. Not the smoothest against my skin and not the closest either. They may work for you, just didn’t for me.
Steven Carter –
I did not get on with these blades at all. I have a bit soft growth and these blades pull from day 1 even with a pre-balm, and are too uncomfortable after three uses.
I don’t get a close enough shave and sorry to say will not be buying these again.
Daniel –
These aren’t as sharp as the Gillette 7 Yellow but much more smooth and forgiving. I get no skin irritation on my neck with these.
Gari Mclean –
Very impressed with these, better than the Wilkinson sword, Derby and Astra blades. Best of the mid range razor blades in my opinion. Very very smooth and as sharp as any other blade i’ve used except the feathers. Recommend giving them a try.
J13MBR –
I have been using these for 2 weeks now instead of Feathers/ Green Astras which are my stock blades. I really like these Sharks, smooth and sharp with absolutely no cuts or nicks in a variety of razors (38C, 34G, Superspeed, Fat handle Tech). These are the absolute business as far as I am concerned I’ve found my third go-to blade. Have just bought a big stock of these if that is anything to go by! Excellent.
Simon Daniels –
Very attractive packaging and a very sharp blade. Are they the same as ASCO? As another reviewer writes, they are made in the same factory. My guess is not, a little sharper a little less forgiving. An excellent blade either way and highly recommended.
Craig Carroll –
Another one of my favourites…a very close second to the ASCO, and so it should be as it’s made in the same factory. Always a smooth clean shave and reasonably durable.
Tank –
Struggling with very sensitive skin I all but gave up DE shaving until trying these. I don’t think they are the sharpest I have tried but even with the slight tugging I get (usually 3-4 day stubble mind you), there is very little irritation and I don’t get the little cuts like with other blades I’ve tried. Having said it is not the sharpest I’m able to go over the same area a number of times and get a very close shave which was not possible previously due to the extreme irritation after two passes. By far my favourite DE balde! (Others tried: Feather, Astra Stainless and Platinum, Merkeur, Israeli, Dorco)
William Yates –
Originally ordered Gillette 7o’clock blades but received these instead. Customer services offered to replace them but I thought I would give them a go. I originally used Derby blades but these a so much better for me. Sharp, comfortable and long lasting blade that does the job very well. Plus I love that they come in a cardboard rather than plastic box!
Steven McNeill –
I’m happy to be in the water with these Sharks! These are my 3rd set of branded razor blades (4inc non branded) since I started my DE shaving and I am impressed so far. Before these I used Derby Extras and Astra Superiors. The Derbys were good, lasted well and gave a good shave but not very close. The Astras shaved closer but dulled and cut/nicked too soon. The Sharks on the other hand seem much sharper and closer cutting than the above were for me and so far I have had 3 shaves with 1 blade and it still feels as sharp as the 1st use.
The only downside (and oddly, upside) to the sharpness of these blades for me is that if you have blemish prone skin or raised areas of skin due to ingrown hairs the blade will happily slice through them and you will not feel a thing! So far I have only done this once or twice around the neck but the next day it has healed just fine.
For the price I think you get a really good shave and sharp blades. I did want Feathers but they were out of stock so settled for Sharks based on my skin type and their reviews. If you have delicate/ sensitive skin then these may be too sharp and require caution but Derby and Astra users may find these offer a bit more sharpness and durability.
Ravi –
Having enjoyed (yes, shaving has become a pleasure not a chore these days) using the Asco blades, I was expecting big things from the Shark blades. Sadly, these (quite literally) didn’t cut it for me. They worked well enough for the first shave, sharp if not particularly smooth, but dulled quickly and were unusable for a complete second shave.
Paul Woodcock –
I got two packs of these free with my first order from the Shaving Shack. I used them in mu Edwin Jagger Chatsworth DE razor, and found they produced a very close and smooth shave, not as sharp as a Gillette 7 Yellow, however much more forgiving. I have a problem patch on my neck and these blades glided across it removing the hair effortlessly and without any irritation. Highly recommended.
Luka Murn –
Got them as a gift with my ordered package. used them with two different shavettes, but they just don’t match my type of skin, the are not smooth on my skin. next downside is, when i broke it in half, both halves were bent and i needed to straighten them. otherwise they are really sharp.
Les Brand –
I’ve been DE shaving for just over a year now and have used quite a few different makes of razor blade.
My current favourite is the Gilette 7 o’clock and I see no reason to change from these, but I will carry on trying different blades as well and that’s why I bought these Shark’s.
I have no complaints at all with these blades and can recommend them without any reservation. I’ve not suffered from any cuts, soreness or rashes using these.
There’s probably very little difference between these and the 7 o’clocks so I think it’s just down to personal preference that I choose the 7 o’clocks over these Shark’s.
Mark Bickley –
I’ve been using Shark with my Parker 97R razor & have found them much better than the Astra & Lord brands. They are both sharp & smooth & have worked brilliantly with both Proraso & Vulfix shave creams. Everyone’s growth is different, of course. I can suffer dry skin, with a soft enough growth on my face but can be very wiry & tough around my chin, my neck in particular is vulnerable to dragging because my hair there grows in different directions — but Shark have dealt with the issue where other makes have failed. Might not work so well for those with a very coarse growth. Based on some of the comments here I do now want to try the Asco.
SB –
Bought these only on the strength of the little shark picture and was very impressed once i tried them out. Can’t see me changing to any other blade now, especially when they are posted free by this excellent site!
Andrew Hall –
Nice and smooth but VERY sharp Treat with care and you will get a great shave from it.
Christopher Winspear –
My new favourite blade. I have previously only used Gillette 7 Oclocks and Feather blades. I found I cut myself too easily with the Gillettes and I always thought I would only ever use Feathers….until I got a free sample of these and I definately have a new first choice blade.
They give a very good shave and I find I rarely get any nicks, if any they are the ones you don’t notice at all. Tremendous blades and a great price. No going back.
Colin Waller –
Just started using these for the very first time, to be honest was a little bit reluctant to change from Derby and also use Feathers. As I was occasionally getting a bit of a burn from my feather using a merkur slant bar, but touch wood these seem to be just fine
Mr Nigel Head –
If you look at online reviews shark blades tend to be overlooked in favour of other brands, which to me doesn’t give them the credit they deserve. I’ve tried a few brands and for me Shark blades have come out on top. I’ve quite thick stubble and get shaving rash quite easily especially on the one side of my neck. I found these blades to be sharp enough to tackle my stubble but smooth enough not to give me any rash even when going against the grain. For me they’re my first choice.
Mr ross leather –
Of the four brands I’ve tried, including ‘Feather’, these are my favourite (not that any of them have been bad). I am struck by their flexibility and this, coupled with their obvious sharpness, means I seem to get a better shave and can be more ‘aggressive’ (by which I really mean careless) without fear off cutting myself. Plus they have a really cool shark on the box!
Mr CARL BRANTON –
tried these with my open comb head on my Drake razor, like the result a lot, easily as good as the Feather ones I normally use. Gave a good close shave and I would recommend to any one.
