Ask Aaron Q/A: How to avoid nicks & cuts when shaving with a DE safety razor
Posted in Ask Aaron Q & A, Double Edge Shaving, Safety Razors, Shaving Tips | Comments (1)
Les Edwards, from the UK, asks:
“I have been using Gillette razors most of my life, I have just brought and used for the first time a safety razor which I bought from Boots, to say it was a bloodbath is an understatement, it looked like a suicide bid in my bathroom, I am assuming I did something wrong! Please help!! On the bits that remained blood free, it was the closest shave ever.”
AARON SAYS
“Mr. Edwards,
I’m glad you have decided to take the plunge into safety razor shaving!
A few tips should bring you closer to shaving without such a bloodletting. First, shower before you shave, and once you get out apply a good pre-shave cream or oil.
Next use a good shaving cream that is applied with a brush or your hand, not canned, pressurized goo! Third, study the way your beard grows and shave with the direction of growth for a while. You will just want to go with the grain until you master the techniques, it might not be as close at first, but you will reap the benefits in the long run.
Next lock your wrist as your shave and keep the blade angle at approximately 30 degrees.
Fifth, rinse your razor often to prevent debris and lather clogging up the razor.
Lastly, after all this use a styptic pen on any cuts or nicks and apply a good post-shave balm or cream to sooth and tend to your freshly shaven face! Put these int practice and I’m sure your shaves will improve in no time!
Happy Shaving!
Aaron”

Ask Aaron Q/A: Should I upgrade my DE safety razor this Christmas?
Posted in Ask Aaron Q & A, Double Edge Shaving, Safety Razors | Comments (0)
Andrew Horwell, from the UK, asks:
“I have been DE shaving for a couple of months or so now and getting on a lot better. I use an Edwin Jagger basic-ish DE razor (think it’s the 29L or something, only cost about £20). I am thinking of upgrading my razor at Christmas but not sure what to? Would I be just best stopping with my current razor? I have sensitive skin and use Taylor of old Bond st ‘jerym’ and an Edwin Jagger best badger brush. Currently using derby razor blades.”
AARON SAYS
“Mr. Horwell,
I’m a pretty firm believer in the phrase “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” when it comes to things that are currently working. It sounds like you have a nice set-up that is working well for you. However, I do also encourage you to experiment and explore. You might find something that works even better for you. If you are looking to upgrade your razor, I think the the Merkur Progress would be a great next step razor. It is adjustable allowing you to customize your shave to your face and how the shave is feeling that day and is a great razor for experienced shavers. Some others you might want to contemplate trying are the Merkur Futur, the Edwin Jagger Chattsworth, the Bluebeard’s “Scimitar” and the Parker 90R. If you’re feeling really adventurous try the Merkur Slant. These would all be good upgrades and worthy razors to try!
Smooth Shaving!

The Shaving Shack has joined forces with leading razor blade sharpener MagnaBlade to giveaway a luxury shaving set worth more than £50.
Comprising of a quality Bluebeards Revenge starter pack and a MagnaBlade, this shaving set would make the perfect Christmas present.
The Bluebeards Revenge starter pack consists of a pre shave oil, a tub of beard reducing shaving cream, post shave balm, ‘doubloon’ shaving brush and some ‘manly’ smelling anti-perspirant deodorant.

The Shaving Shack is delighted to announce that we are now stocking the luxurious Pils Stainless Steel Double Edge Razor (101NE).
“When Pils say that they manufacture all of their handcrafted shaving accessories themselves, they mean it,” said Tom Trueman, head buyer at The Shaving Shack.
“Pils take pride in placing their logo exclusively on products that are designed and processed by hand, never using low-priced bulk parts.”
Finished in a gorgeous brushed stainless steel finish, this connoisseur two-piece razor personifies precision and craftsmanship from the German experts at Pils.
“Absolutely flawless construction combined with a very distinct design makes this the ultimate artisan razor,” Tom added.
US wet shaving guru Mike Sandoval, from Shaving101.com, rates the Pils 101NE DE safety razor as one of the very best.
He said: “I love mine, plain and simple. It may very well be the last DE razor I ever buy. Can I honestly recommend it? Sure, but with conditions.
“This is NOT a razor for beginners or those looking for a cost effective shave. This is a razor for those who have extra cash lying around asking to be spent, and even then there are razors on the market that cost much less and do a very nice, if not better job for some people.
“This is a razor for those who want a piece of art and craftsmanship that delivers a great shave if your technique is sound.”

Ask Aaron Q/A: Which is better & easier - A hanging strop or a hand strop?
Posted in Ask Aaron Q & A, Straight Razor Shaving | Comments (0)
Antonio García Palomo, from Spain, asks:
“I’m going to get a strop (fan of wet shaving but using safety razor so far). My only doubt is a hanging or a hand strop. Awaiting for your advice.”
AARON SAYS
“Mr. Palomo, Honestly I use a safety razor most of the time, however I do keep in touch and read about what happens with the straight razor world. Both strops have their place, but from what I understand the hanging strop will be more suitable to the needs of a beginning straight razor user. That would be the one I would recommend.
Smooth Shaving!

Ask Aaron Q/A: Double edged blade that will fit the old Wardonia razors
Posted in Ask Aaron Q & A, Double Edge Shaving, Safety Razors | Comments (0)
Steve Andrews, from the UK, asks:
“I’m looking for a double edged blade that will fit the old Wardonia razors, the holes are in a slightly different place to the gillette / wilkinson patern.”
AARON SAYS
“Mr Andrews,
I’m afraid that I don’t know of any blades that would fit the Wardonia razors. The Gillette/Wilkinson razors became the standard for blades to match, and those razors that didn’t fit those patterns usually had a proprietary blade to go with them. So unless you find a cache of new old stock blades I’m afraid you might be out of luck. Sorry I couldn’t offer any better news!
Best of Shaves!

Ask Aaron Q/A: Can you recommend me an affordable quality razor?
Stacey Roberts, from the UK, asks:
“I’m looking for some advice; my father has asked that I purchase a feather razor, replacement blades and alum block. Can you please recommend? I’m looking for a reasonable quality razor but I don’t want to spend hundreds of pounds as it may not be the right type of shaver as he has sensitive skin. I look forward to hearing from you.”
AARON SAYS
“Ms Roberts, I can understand your hesitation to spend that amount of money when you’re not sure if the razor will work for your dad. It might be best to start with a less expensive shavette such as the Bluebeard’s “Cut-Throat” or the Dovo Solingen shavette. These would be good beginner shavettes for him to use and see if he likes them. I hope you dad enjoys the razor!
Smooth Shaving,
Aaron”

How to style and shape a range of mo styles
Our good friends at Wilkinson Sword have created the essential ‘Mo Styling’ guide for all Mo Bros taking part in the month long charity event.
Wilkinson Sword are sponsors of this year’s Movember campaign.
Mo Styling
Choosing which mo to grow is the first challenge of a new Mo Bro recruit. Check out the 6 custom mo designs below for inspiration. Keep in mind the size of your face – smaller faces need a small mo whereas more striking, larger faces need a more prominent style.
The Rascal
If ‘Danger’ is your middle name, style up this bad boy for a look crafted to roguish perfection.
How to: Grow your mo along the upper lip about 2cm in length. As it passes the edges of the mouth, groom the hair using a trimmer. Allow your mutton chops to flourish so they grow down your face and meet with your sculpted mo.
The Eccentric
If you’re the off-the-wall life-and-soul, get trimming and create the minimal look with maximum effect.
How to: Precisely sculpt each side of your mo leaving only an inch of hair in the middle. The rest of your face has to be fuzz free, so use a decent razor for the best shave for your skin.
The Connoisseur
If you scream sophisticate and scoundrel in one, why not don the best way to finesse your face?
How to: Grow your mo in to a perfect rectangle along the upper lip, using a trimmer to create neat edges. Curl the ends up using your fingers and add a little wax to hold in place.
The Maverick
If you are a bit of a loose cannon then you’ll appreciate the crafted chaos of the marvellous mo on every wanted list.
How to: Grow hair over the upper lip and groom the edges so they finish about 1cm past your lip. Maintain the curved edges regularly and keep the length in check with a trimmer.
The Visionary
If your look and mind are way ahead of their time, shape the only style that can keep up.
How to: Grow the hair long above the upper lip so it can be parted and pulled to either side. Once the hair gets to a decent length maintain the neat edges with a trimmer.
About Movember
Movember is a charity event held throughout November to raise funds and awareness for men’s health issues. Known as Mo Bros, all participants register at the start of November with a clean-shaven face, then grow and groom their moustaches throughout November, raising as much money and awareness about male health issues as possible.
Wilkinson Sword Classic
As well as producing modern day cartridge razor blade systems, Wilkinson Sword are also proud manufacturers of classic double edge razors.
So if you’re happy in your skin and want simplicity with performance then the Wilkinson Sword Classic is the razor for you. And The Shaving Shack sells Wilkinson Sword double edged razor blades at very competitive prices.
