After applying some excellent Omega shaving cream I let this razor loose around my face. One word comes to mind and that's "smooth" which contrasts nicely with it's "real man" razor image, as defined by it's weight and it's purposeful ruggedness. I use this with some Mitchell's Wool Fat Shaving Soap, being a small bowl (shaving shack sell a larger one), I used cheese grater to make my soap fit, and it really works well. The handle on the top is more decorative than usable, but hey, you can work that out from the photos and dimensions are published in the description. 	Product: Kent BK4 Silver Tip Badger Shaving Brush (White) Review: Research can be a curse, what started out as me checking whether £10 was a good price for a shaving brush, turned into a full-on shaving project. While I can't compare this brush to others, I can confirm that it will exceed the expectations of a beginner! I couldn't find anywhere online that was cheaper than the shaving shack for a silver-tip brush, let alone a BK4. 	Product: Merkur 38C Barberpole Review: Ah, my first steps into the world of DE shaving. For 10 years I shaved with clippers, maintaining a constant level of stubble. I'd given up on wet shaving due to the horrific rash I would always get the next day, and besides, every time I was clean shaven (weddings, interviews etc) people would always comment that I looked 12 yrs old!! Time moves on....looking young could now be considered a high quality problem. A quick search on the internet might lead you to think that the best shave comes from potions and gadgets, however proper research reveals that solutions for today can be found in products from the past, a good brush, quality soap, a faithful razor and cheap (high quality) blades. I'm 3 weeks in, the learning curve has been enjoyable, and the results are better than I ever achieved in 1 year with a Gillette mach 3, or 3 months with an electric razor. I don't think I've come across a blade yet than i can say is as sharp as the feather and I've used probably 10 different DE blades. 	Product: 10 Gillette 7 O' Clock Double Edged Razor Blades Review: These blades are produced in St. Petersburg Russia and they are by far the smoothest and most comfortable blade at its price point that I have used to date. These blades differ from the Russian 7 O'clock PermaSharp blades in smoothness and sharpness IMHO. The SharpEdge blades are coated where as the PermaSharp blades are not. I am not sure sure about the same blades that are produced in India, I have not tried them. I have tried this blade in several razors, and with many different soaps and creams. With every trial run, I get excellent results and of course some are better with certain soap/cream and razor combinations than others but I still get steller results compared to other blades I have used. I find these blades just as smooth and sharp as Feather but far cheaper. The only thing I feel the Feathers have over the SharpEdge blades is the fact that they seem to last longer than the SharpEdge blades. If you like Feathers, I urge you to give these a try. 	Product: Kent BK4 Silver Tip Badger Shaving Brush (White) Review: Having decided that DE shaving is definitely for me after a month of using the value bristle brush, and with a bonus coming up, I treated myself to the BK4. I was worried that it would be a little on the small side, but don't be fooled - the knot fans out very wide and it looks massive on my face as I'm applying a lather. I'm 6ft 3 with large hands, and this brush is the perfect size. Beautifully soft, it whips up mounds of lather in seconds. I've used it with Omega Cream, Colonel Conk Amber soap and Cyril Salter Sandalwood cream and it handles them all without any problems. 	Product: Merkur Matt Silver Handle Safety Razor 38002 Review: This is the first "proper" DE that I bought, and I can advise it to any new-starter or veteran of wet-shaving. After trying some cheap Chinese DE variants, being unsatisfied by the experience, I took my chance with Merkur, which seems to never fail its customers. The hardest part was the "Which Merkur to start?" and after long hours of research, it was between 34 and 38C. As this is the new 38C with enhanced features (combining the best features), it was pretty easy to call last decision. The 2-piece structure is same with 38C, a crucial point in replacing the razor blades. The blade is hefty, which is totally necessary for blade to cut the beard (not forcing the user to "scrape off"). All you need is to glide the blade, and it will be a German piece of art in your hand. Long handle is something desired for people with bigger hands, but it does not create any problems with guys with smaller ones. 	Product: Shavette/Straight Razor Renewable Blades (Black) Review: I bought this shavette as a way of dipping my little toe into the realm of straight razor shaving. Its not quite a traditional straight razor but very similar AND without the need to hone or strop your blade. The procedure for placing the DE blade (just a normal DE blade split in two) into the shavette is actually very simple. Their is however some skill required and a steady hand to secure a smooth no cuts free shave. The great thing about this straight razor is its cheap enough to give it a go. Really like putting your nose in a bunch of (fresh) lavender flowers. I can not pass the bowl without open it and smelling... The TooBS is very creamy therefore protection is very good even with a sharp blade like father etc. The only small drawback is the used dye (=critical substance) – In my opinion it would be better to have no dye at all then this cream would also be a fully natural product. 	Product: Merkur 34C Heavy Duty Classic Review: I had a Parker for my first safety razor, then tried my brothers Merkur. I noticed the difference so much I got one for myself. Great solid razor gives out consistent shaves. Despite it not being twist to open as with most of the Parkers the blade is alot easier to change compared to the other Merkurs. Comes in a very nice chrome finish feels solid and like a well engineered piece of equipment. Highly recommended for a mid-priced razor I'm actually buying one for my Grandad now! 	Product: Omega 49 Professional Pure Bristle Brush Review: I would call this one the lathermachine ! I produce gobs of lather in no time, wether you use cream or soap. The boar bristles are not scratchy at all and when the bristles start to split after a few uses, it tends to as soft as a good badger brush but for a fraction of the price. One downside is the smell when you get it out of the box...it's smell just like hell ! Even the powerful fragance of Tabac can't beat his smell. Fortunately, after one week of use, it disappear. A beautiful-looking and solid piece of engineering, it has a reassuring weight in my large hand and just oozes quality. Without having to apply any pressure as I ran it over my face, it quickly & smoothly dispensed with a week's worth of growth in single strokes. I can honestly say that this is the closest shave I've ever had in 25 years. 	Product: Proraso Shaving Cream Tube (150ml) Review: Nearly everyone recommends this cream, it's easy to see why. The first cream I used when I got into wet-shaving saw me get some of the best shaves of my life, and the cooling sensation you get on your skin is terrific for hot sunny days, really revives you. The eucalyptus scent is certainly unique, and seems to divide opinions. Personally I think it's a very fresh, green scent and I like it, although it doesn't stay around for long if you're not a fan of it. 	Product: Merkur 23C Long Handled Classic Review: My first DE razor for about 20 years. I selected it as I have large hands (ape like is one description!). It arrived very quickly and I couldn't resist having a go - hey it's a new toy. It has a very pleasing weight to the head and although described as long handled, it isn't unwieldy. I went with the grain first off and was quite disappointed if I'm honest, tried it going across the grain and it was better. Finally I tried how I've always shaved, against the grain, and yep, a great close shave and no soreness and issues. I now shave against the grain straight from the off and find it to be excellent for me, far closer than the mach 3 and less irritation. OK, so now I'm a sucker for these razors and have just ordered the small travel Merkur to take on my travels with me. I think it is a nice looking razor and I am a bit upset that it now resides in the bathroom cabinet rather than on display after my 2 year old son started casting admiring glances at it whilst I cleaned his teeth. 	Product: Musgo Real Pre Shave Oil Review: This stuff sticks to the skin, which suits me as I have dry skin. My shaving method is; wash with Molton Brown face cleanser, hold hot, wet flannel against chin etc. for about 1 minute, apply Musco Real pre-shave oil, put pea-sized bit of Musco Real shave cream in a bowl with shave soap (currently Mitchell's Wool Fat), whip up lather with brush (Vulfix whatever), daub lather on chin, pass razor over chin, one pass only, clearing razor between sweeps, re-apply soap/cream mix (plenty is left on the brush), pass razor over chin etc. a second time. I have yet to try many other blades but as a newbie I first was afraid that they wouldn't be my thing, but I was wrong. Not only are they great and offer a good, smooth shave but are also cheap and last up to four shaves. On the negative side I found that they could be a bit sharper, but I guess that there are people who like them as they are. 	Product: Merkur 38C Barberpole Review: I ordered this razor as my first DE razor ever a few weeks ago and since then I've been having the best shaves in my life. First, like many others, I was concerned that this would be a rather "dangerous" experience since I wasn't familiar with safety razors or blades but the truth is that it is very easy to shave with it and since then I have reduced in nicks and cuts by a 99%. It is aggressive but not too much. This way it offers a well balanced equilibrium. Another thing I like it's is heaviness. It allows you to slide and glide the razor so easily and gently over the skin without any pressure that it will help you to get a closer shave. And finally here's a tip I love: The razor is completely made of quality metal, that means that if you rinse it off under hot water and then apply it on your face you get a lovely delicious warm feeling you can't experience with a cartridge razor. 	Product: Merkur 23C Long Handled Classic Review: I bought this as my first DE razor having got fed up with the price of cartridge razor heads. This gives a great shave, so far I have used it with Merkur, Feather and Israeli blades. It works well with all these, but the Israeli are my favourite and fantastic value. I chose the 23c as I wanted a longer handled razor, and I find it very comfortable to use. DE shaving is rather different to shaving with the multiblade cartridge razors so it is worth doing a bit of research into how to shave if you have not used a DE before. The handle has a very nice feel to it, it is very grippy. Not quite as fast to change blades as a butterfly razor but it is still as easy (I will add I think it is easier to clean due to being able to take it apart easily). Got it for the weekend sale price (with 30 free double edged blades), I think this was a fantastic deal. 	Product: Alum Block Review: I got this Alum Block when I started shaving with a DE razor and brush. It is so worth it as it stops cuts from bleeding and closes your pores after a nice hot shave. Much better than using small pieces of tissue where its bleeding, this just closes cuts instantly. I've had mine 6 months and I'd say only (if even) 1/3 of it has gone, it's still got lots of life left in it. The little box it comes in is perfect for storing ot and your current DE blade. 	Product: Kent BK4 Silver Tip Badger Shaving Brush (White) Review: My brush arrived very quickly and I was impressed by the red presentation case. This adds to the quality feel of the product. Initially, I thought that I had made a mistake when lathering as my old brush seemed to produce much more lather. What had happened was that because the tips of the bristles are so soft I had hardly picked up any shave cream at all. With a little more cream loaded it easily out-performed my other brush. This worked extremely well with soap or cream producing a superb lather with hardly any effort. The brush is very well made and adds a touch of class to the morning shave. I had been using a Parker DE razor, with Japanese Feather blades, which is actually quite good, but the Merkur goes to the highest level. Arm the razor with Japanese Feather blades, Proraso shaving cream, you will have the closest shave. it is important to hold the razor lightly and let the blade do the work. 	Product: Simpsons Chubby Best Badger Brush (CH2) Review: No doubt a quality brush - these are now made by Vulfix and are different to the original Simpsons brushes. I found the CH2 too big for me, and it's a bit of a lather hog. You really have to squeeze up the lather from its depths. It's scrubby when new but really softens up. When you get the hang of the soap/water ratio, this soap really gives a nice lather that makes the shave really smooth and comfortable. 	Product: Merkur Travel Razor 933CL Review: I've been using this razor everyday for about 5 months now - both home and abroad. It is absolutely great. I didn't believe how compact the package was when it arrived, it folds neatly into a tiny case (which is of great durable leather) but don't be fooled by its small size, the assembled razor is still a hefty weight, rock solid and more than big enough to provide a great shave - not to mention the absolute flawless quality. I was sceptical about the short handle but it's more than long enough to shave with. The quality of the shave is superb but I have found it less close than other razors so it can take a few passes to get it right - and having very sensitive skin this can be a bit of an issue around the neck. That being said, this is still the only razor I shave with (its not as close as my Gillette fusion but feels a million times better to use) I am confident that I'll be using it daily for a long ime to come. So frustrated have I become with the gloop foams/soaps and the bewildering array of, frankly dreadful, modern 'razors' (and I use the term very loosely) that something had to be done. Blind E-searching led me to Shave Shack and the immediate purchase of an Merkur HD 34C and it is an item of absolute beauty which works like a dream with my (Jordanian) Erasmic cream. Only tried the free Israeli blades so far but Derby's and Omega cream are winging their merry way to join what will be a magnificent and probably costly obsession. One question,why did Gillette, makers of such great kit in the 50s & 60s, leave such a huge potential market? I love the look of the Edwin Jagger chrome 89 so that may be next but only after a badger brush. The service from Dan at the Shack has been first class as have the products. I'm in!! Looking at these made me think of my grandads razor years ago and I decided to look online and give it a go. It is about the largest model I have seen and it certainly gives a good introduction into the world. I was already a dabbler into straight razor usage and wanted something to allow for a quicker shave be it at home or away and this allows for both. The razor itself is well made and has a lovely finish. The ability to change the aggression of the cut makes all the difference when learning but don't do what I did and spend each shave trying a different setting. This razor works better if you get to know a range of settings before deciding which one is for you, don't be afraid of the scarier end of the scale. Overall I would say that it is a good razor but very expensive. Not to bad for a novice, afterall it was my first, but I would say not entirely essential either. Perhaps something to work up to once you have tested the water with a cheaper model. As for the Shaving SHack, the service was excellent and very quick, all that could have been wanted really.
