The Progress Vulfix 404 “Grosvenor” Mixed Badger and Bristle Brush is a firm favourite amongst wetshavers looking for a bargain brush. The badger/boar bristle mix provides that rare combination to give a stiff backbone, ideal for lathering soaps, yet not at the cost of being too scratchy like a pure bristle brush can be.

Ask Mantic Q&A #2&3: Brush Break-In & Types

July 16, 2010 · Posted in Ask Mantic, Shaving Brushes, Shaving Tips, Shaving Videos · Comment

In May, we managed to get a Question and Answer session with American wet shaving legend Mantic, a veteran of the BadgerAndBlade and ShaveMyFace forums.

The session proved very popular, with lots of excellent entries being submitted. We cherry picked the very best ones and sent them onto the wet shaving guru.

The first question Mantic answered was: “Why do I on occasion find that the lather from a soap is fine on the first pass, really creamy and slick, but when I start to apply with the brush for subsequent passes, it has turned airy and foamy? It is with soaps that I have had good results from before too.” You can watch his detailed answer by clicking here.

Today Mantic answers two more questions.

David asked: “It is assumed that boar shaving brushes need to be broken in. Do badger brushes also improve after a break-in period? I have read occasional mentions of this but have seen no definite discussion on the shave forums.”

And Kevin wanted to know: “Not having much experience with different brushes, is there a particular type of brush that I should use with soaps or creams? Boar hair brushes, or badger hair brushes?”

You can watch Mantic answer both of these questions in the video below.

Why is my shaving brush shedding hair?!!

April 19, 2010 · Posted in Information, Shaving Tips · Comment

Relax. Shaving brushes can go through phases of shedding hair, especially at the beginning when the brush is settling. A new brush can typically expect to shed hairs for the first three months of its life as it sheds any loose hairs not removed in the manufacturing process. This can happen regardless of whether the brush is premium or not as they are held together by the same means. The problem arises if it is continuous.

If your brush is shedding hair then here are some things to check out:

  • If the hairs that the brush is shedding are short hairs then this can be a result of hairs breaking rather than shedding due to the brush being used incorrectly ie. Not letting the bristles soak in warm NOT hot water to soften them before use. Soaking a brush in water that is too hot can cause the epoxy resin in the handle to expand causing the handle to crack or the hairs to shed. For this reason it is always best to try to soak the bristles and not the handle.
  • If you do have a brush that is shedding it is common practice to comb thru the bristles with a fine toothed comb, this can help to remove any loose hairs.

With the above in mind we normally ask you to use a shedding brush for a few more weeks to see if it is continuous. If it is still shedding after a few weeks then get in contact with us to discuss a possible replacement. It will then go to the manufacturer for assessment and then a replacement can be arranged.

Well-groomed men get more bedroom action, study finds

Men, get out your razors and quick. A new study has revealed men who shave regularly have twice as much sex as those that don’t.

Well-groomed males have more sex

The survey, conducted for Milford-based razor maker Schick by US market research company StrategyOne, found that men who shave at least five times a week are having sex 15.5 times per month, compared to 7.8 times for unshaven men.

The latest study also reveals that well-groomed males are also happier with life, more outgoing and sociable and much more likely to report living their dreams.

According to the survey, men who shave five times a week are twice as likely to have a job as those who shave twice a week, and far less likely to live with their parents.

Three-quarters of women also agree that a cleanly-shaven man is more of a turn-on because they see such men as having a higher self-awareness, deeper commitment and greater comfort with themselves.
