Los Angeles’ leading barbershop giving a traditional cut-throat shave using Bluebeards Revenge shaving cream
In this traditional shaving documentary, Vinnie Morey and Trent Magnano talk about how their unique Hollywood barbershop (The Proper Barbershop), a blend of modern art, street culture blended with the traditional and old-fashioned, was born.
They discuss their open razor technique using Bluebeards Revenge shaving cream and how a traditional shave is “one of the last things a man can do to really enjoy a service that is not a manicure and pedicure you can do with your wife”.
The Proper Barbershop was created by Vinnie and Trent as a way of bringing back the classic old-fashioned barbershop to the modern world.
Vinnie and Trent are both very decorated barbers with a driving passion and true respect for the art and tradition of their craft.
“We both realised that there was a huge gap in the Los Angeles men’s grooming community,” said Vinnie. “In our view, too many men have never been to or even seen a real traditional barbershop!
“With that in mind, we decided to build a barbershop that has never been seen before. It was the most beautiful marriage of modern art, street culture blended with the traditional, old-fashioned barbershop. In that moment, The Proper was born!”
The Proper Barbershop is located on 7950 3rd St. Los Angeles.
“Come in today for a hot towel shave and a real barber’s haircut, and make sure to enjoy our fun-loving, easy-going atmosphere while you’re here,” added Vinnie.
“Relax with an X-Box, watch a funny movie, and have a cold beer in our back lounge. We set out to create the last true safe house for a man to come and enjoy being a man.”
Bluebeards Revenge described as one of the best shaving creams ever
Dave Alexander, grooming editor for About.com, has described The Bluebeards Revenge as a “must-have” product and one of the “best shaving creams” he has ever used.
”This product takes the traditional shaving cream and throws in a little science for a truly outstanding shave,” says the American grooming legend.
Dave, who has been About.com’s Guide to Men’s Hair since 2008, praised the fragrance for being “clean and light”, adding that “the product performed exceptionally well – among the best I’ve ever tried”.
“The Bluebeards Revenge can be used right out of the jar without a shaving brush. Of course, I highly recommend using one for maximum effectiveness and lather. In my tests, I tried the product both with and without a brush and the performance and lather were similar,” he explained.
”I enjoy the ritual of shaving, so I used the product with a brush and my trusty double-edge razor. The results were amazing,” added Dave, a licensed master stylist who has been cutting men’s hair for nearly two decades and has trained barbers and stylists across the USA.
Dave described the lather as “rich and creamy”, adding that it “held up during my entire shave”.
”The product left my skin smooth and moisturized to the point I didn’t really feel the need to use a separate moisturizer afterward. I also got an excellent, irritation free shave using The Bluebeard’s Revenge,” Dave Alexander, About.com.
“The cream created a very slick surface on my skin and I experienced no razor drag at all,” he said. “The shave was incredibly close and I got an excellent shave with just one pass of the razor – not something that happens all that often with other shave creams I’ve tried.
”The product left my skin smooth and moisturized to the point I didn’t really feel the need to use a separate moisturizer afterward. I also got an excellent, irritation free shave using The Bluebeard’s Revenge.”
But would Dave recommend the Bluebeards to his readers? “Absolutely. The performance was on par with some of the best shave creams I’ve tried (in fact, it now tops that list),” he said.
“Great performance, cool packaging, paraben-free. What’s not to love?”

Review of The Bluebeards Revenge shaving cream
After using this cream for a number of months, I thought the time was right to add my two cents to the mass of reviews and discussion already surrounding this new entrant into the world of shaving creams.
To date, the creams I’ve shaved with have included ones by Proraso, Speick, Taylor of old Bond St, Cyril Salter and the Body Shop. Now I’ve enjoyed all of those creams, they all have their own unique qualities, but amongst that list it would probably be agreed that the Taylor and Salter creams were the high-end products. The ones that rise slightly above the others: in terms of scent, performance and that little extra luxury factor. They’re the creams you might choose for your weekend shaves when you have more time to pamper yourself, or the ones to splash out on as gifts or presents.
Well, I can now confidently say that the Bluebeards Revenge cream competes easily with those two ‘high-end’ creams and is fast becoming a favourite. It’s a very thick, dense cream which lathers easily and like the Taylor and Salter creams has a very wide margin in terms of how much water you can add to it. Some creams you add just a little too much water to and they become watery and ineffective, which can prove frustrating for the beginner looking to learn his or her lathering technique. With Bluebeards though you really have to go overboard with the water before you start to see a runny lather, making it perfect for those just starting out in the world of wet-shaving. Its density also means that it’ll last you a very long time.
I used this cream with my Muhle best-badger brush and my Omega boar, both times achieving a thick, lubricating layer of lather that stayed good for the entire shave and left my skin feeling smooth and clean. In terms of moisturising I find that with my dry skin I always have to use some sort of aftershave balm, with whatever soap or cream I’m using. I certainly didn’t feel any tautness or dryness when using this cream though, so I could see others having no need for any additional balm.
Overall then this is a very high-quality cream, which catches the eye and the curiosity with the boldness of its statements and presentation, then wins you over with its alluring scent and top-notch performance. An excellent cream I’d highly recommend. Richard Wall
The scent of the cream is very nice: warm and spicy yet quite mellow at the same time. I can certainly see what Bluebeards mean when they describe it as ‘barbershop with a modern twist’. The strength of the scent is I’d say about average: you get a good whiff of it whilst shaving and it lingers a little in the bathroom after you’re finished, but it doesn’t dominate a room like Tabac or a strong sandalwood scent does.
In terms of its claims to reduce beard growth using the ingredient decelerine I’d have to study and use the cream over a concerted period of time before coming to any conclusions. So far I’ve just added the Bluebeards to my rotation of soaps and creams, so can’t say with any certainty whether it does reduce the stubble. But there are plenty of reports singing decelerine’s praises, so I guess it’s working for some folk out there.
The packaging of Bluebeards is certainly eye-catching. With the skull and crossbones and bright blue background this is definitely the first one your eye would be drawn to in a line-up of creams, particularly when pitted against the more traditional products with their conservative and classic designs. Personally I prefer the more classic, traditional approach to packaging, but that’s just me. The tub does though have an advantage over its rivals in terms of being smaller, and therefore easier to include in your travel bag. Plus being all plastic it’s easy to recycle when you eventually do manage to empty it.
Overall then this is a very high-quality cream, which catches the eye and the curiosity with the boldness of its statements and presentation, then wins you over with its alluring scent and top-notch performance. An excellent cream I’d highly recommend.

Blogger says Bluebeards Revenge reduced her hair re-growth by 50%
A leading British female blogger says The Bluebeards Revenge™ shaving cream has reduced her hair re-growth by around 50 per cent.
Laura Budd, the editor of popular fashion and lifestyle blog A Daisy Chain Dream, was also full of praise for the cream’s smell, texture and lather.
She wrote: ”If I’m 100 per cent honest, I was incredibly sceptical. I hate shaving my legs and something that could reduce the amount of re-growth really did seem too good to be true. However, I was prepared to give it a go…and I’m honestly glad I did.”
”From the first shave my legs were smoother than they had been in a long time, and re-growth seemed to be about 50 per cent slower than before.”
“I’ve used it several times since then and I remain impressed! I can really see why so many ladies are jumping on to this product.”
Laura, who is 23, described the cream itself as “lovely”, adding that it smelt like an old-fashioned soap.
”You only need the tiniest amounts, about the size of a small almond, and it lathers up surprisingly well; better than many cheaper shaving foams I have used,” she concluded.

The Bluebeards Revenge™ is unique as it contains a miracle ingredient called ‘Decelerine’, which actually reduces hair growth every time it is used.
Women Behind the Rise in Sales of World’s ‘Manliest’ Shaving Cream
One of our best-selling brands has reported that women are behind the bumper sales of its hair-delaying shaving cream.
The Bluebeards Revenge™ is unique as it contains a miracle ingredient called ‘Decelerine’, which actually reduces hair growth every time it is used.
The premium cream, dubbed the ‘Most Manly Shaving Product On the Planet’, has been designed for men with heavy beard growth, as it can reduce a man’s stubble by 40% over just 60 days, making it’s far easier for them to shave in the morning.
Nick Gibbens, brand spokesperson, said: ”Despite the product being heavily aimed at men with heavy beard growths, we started noticing a quarter of customers buying were women. We presumed at first they were buying for their husbands, but the trend continued and is now accounting for half our sales.”
He continued: “We have conducted some research into this, and discovered that women have seen their husbands use it, or seen the Decelerine coverage, and realised that if they use it themselves, they can reduce the hair on their bodies by 40% over 60 days too. So, effectively, our ‘World’s Manliest Shaving Product’ has been hijacked by women to reduce the hair growth on their legs, underarms and bikini line!“
The brand revealed over 2,000 women have snapped up its miracle anti-hair product since its summer launch, and the brand has had to source more feminine shaving brushes (which we also sell at The Shaving Shack) as, unlike regular shaving gels, shaving creams require a brush to lather the cream over the skin, and their new female customers complained that traditional brushes were too manly. Female shavers have also indicated that they enjoy the sensation of using the cream with a brush.
Nick added: “Despite having almost every pink shaving brush in the UK, we have today sold out of these as women are snapping them up with almost every purchase of The Bluebeards Revenge™! We’re having extraordinarily good feedback from our female customers, and because of the huge (and completely unexpected!) surge in our new customer base, we’re doing our bit and giving a donation from every sale to breast cancer charities during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.”
Another reason for this female beauty phenomenon has been attributed to the new face of The Bluebeards Revenge™, Sacha Harding, who was recently crowned Britain’s manliest man. Sacha, the Bedford Blues rugby star, polled more than 140,000 votes to win a nationwide competition and a lucrative one-year modelling contract with The Bluebeards Revenge™.
The Bluebeards Revenge™ is available to buy from our online shaving shop, priced £14.99. A tub will last approximately 3-5 months.
The Bluebeards Revenge™ shaving cream was initially designed for real men with heavy beard growth like US flint knapper Mike Cook (see video below).

Feather All Stainless AS-D1
Leading US wet shaving expert Mike Sandoval descried the new Feather All Stainless safety razor as “probably the most beautifully crafted razor” he has ever seen.
He said: “These are among the highest quality and quite possibly the sharpest instruments that any shaver will ever encounter. Feather’s newest razor breaks the mold of traditional double edge safety razors and raises the bar for design, cutting angle, packaging, and — of course — price.”

The Bluebeards Revenge Luxury Shaving Cream
Mike, who runs leading shaving blog Shaving101.com, concluded: “This razor along with the PILS are connoisseur razors for someone who wants the best of the best in his collection. These new razors take the good ol’ utilitarian safety razor and make it a luxury item — with a price tag to match. The fact that Feather produced a razor with this quality is a strong indicator that the popularity of double edge shaving has been noticed as worthy of an investment.”

Sacha Harding named manliest man in Great Britain
Our friends over at The Bluebeards Revenge have this morning reported that Bedford Blues flanker Sacha Harding has been crowned Britain’s manliest man.
The rugby star polled more than 140,000 votes to win a nationwide competition and a one-year modelling contract to become the new face of the luxury and beard reducing shaving cream.
In August, The Bluebeards Revenge carried out a survey to find what famous people’s features were judged most manly before launching an appeal with the Daily Express newspaper to find men who matched the criteria.
The composite masculine man was a combination of George Clooney’s hair, Scottish actor Gerard Butler’s eyes, Hollywood star Brad Pitt’s nose, British actor Jason Statham’s mouth and James Bond-actor Daniel Craig’s body. We dubbed this man ‘Bradiel Buthney’.
Hundreds applied but, after much deliberation, eight ruggedly handsome suitors were shortlisted in Britain’s biggest masculinity manhunt. And it was Sacha who came out on top of this masculine pile.
Chris Brain, Paul Hunter, Elliot Stevens, Ken Townsend, Oliver Gwyn-Jones, Simon Thorne and Craig Stevenson were the other seven finalists.
Tom Truman, spokesperson for The Bluebeards Revenge, said: “The Bluebeards Revenge is the most masculine shaving cream on the market for men with heavy stubble, and so we set out to find the British man out there who was separated at birth with the world’s most manly fantasy man, ‘Bradiel Buthney’.
“These eight rugged chaps were all worthy winners, but it was Sacha who secured the most public votes.
“We would like to thank all eight guys for their enthusiasm, hard work, commitment and manliness. They have all been a pleasure to work with and will always be considered part of the Bluebeards family.”
The 27-year-old will now take part in photoshoots and TV ads; he will also shave in a host of extreme masculine locations, including a lion’s den and while skydiving (surely enough to put any normal man off entering in the first place

How to make a great shaving lather
For many people who don’t make the time to prepare when shaving, they may not be getting the most out of the experience. The application of the shave cream to work up a lather is, in fact, an important part of the wet shaving process and should not be taken lightly.
If you put a bit more thought into this, you can perfect your shaving performance and get the close shave you desire. You need to start by looking at your pre-shave preparations.
By working the lather into your face you can offer your face protection from the razor and the lubrication allows the blade to glide smoothly across the skin. Once you get this right, you will also notice your skin looks great as the lather moisturises and exfoliates the skin.
The process should begin with the use of a badger brush as this type of shaving brush can get the best results. Choose the brush carefully for a more luxurious and softer feel on the skin. Also, be sure to select shaving soap that allows for a moister and richer lather. This does three things; moisturises your face, lubricates the beard and softens it, giving it the best preparation for the shaving experience.
If you have followed the advice so far, you will have gathered all you need to make a good lather which is ideal for getting the most out of wet shaving.
The next stage is to run the hot water, getting it as hot as you possibly can. If you have bought a decent badger brush that holds moisture well then you will find that as you turn the brush slowly in the water, it absorbs and holds plenty of water.
After this you need to use the tips of the badger brush to permeate the ends with the shaving soap. A lot of force does not need to be applied here, so only do this until lather starts to form in the soap mug.
There is not much more you need to do now until you begin the shaving process. First, you just need to check that the badger brush is warm and full of water and soap, and that your face is still warm and lubricated. If this is the case you can now apply the soap using just the tips of the brush in an unhurried circular motion on the facial area.
As you start to build the lather, the soap is worked deeper into your skin, achieving what you wanted at the outset: a clean face that is exfoliated and protected from the razor blade. Make sure you work the lather evenly on the face to get the best shaving preparation.
If you follow these tips for a good lather technique you can get a much closer and better shave, plus you reduce the need to spend your hard earned money on an excess of other shaving products. However, a pre-shave moisturiser may still be required and a quality aftershave.

Shaving101.com reviews Coate’s Tea Tree Limited Edition Shaving Cream
The Gentleman’s Shop, another fine retailer of men’s grooming products, announced they had acquired the Coates company back in May 2010.
And the re-introduction of this legendary shaving cream created a lot of buzz in the online wet shaving community as it was widely considered one of the best shaving creams ever produced.
Wet shaving guru Mantic even bought a tub of the ‘Coate’s Special Edition Tea Tree and Rosemary Shaving Cream’ and then posted a video review on YouTube last month.

Coate's Special Edition Tea Tree and Rosemary Shaving Cream - Picture taken from Shaving101.com website
He described the cream as “soft”, “very moist” with a “very pleasant scent”. Mantic praised the cream for its quality lather, adding that it’s “very slick” and ensures a “very nice and comfortable shave”.
So when we heard that Mike Sandoval, from Shaving101.com, wanted to test it out, we jumped at the chance to send him a tub.
But what did he think? “The packaging is slightly different from the old packaging, but it is nice and traditional,” he said.
Mike went on to praise the scent of the new Coate’s cream, describing it as “more pleasant because it is formulated with the mixture of tea tree and rosemary”.
“The cream itself is very soft and easy to lather. With only an almond-size amount of cream, I had no problem creating enough lather for a full shave,” Mike explained.
He added: “During the shave, the razor glided nicely along the skin and the Coate’s cream provided suitable protection. The formulation of the cream didn’t cause any sensitivity issues with my skin, and it rinsed away clean leaving a subtle amount of fragrance behind.
”Overall, Coate’s Tea Tree Limited Edition Shaving Cream was a quality cream, but I didn’t find it to be anything extraordinary compared to other shaving creams, such as Truefitt & Hill or Geo. F. Trumper’s.
”The cream didn’t moisturize better or lather better than any quality shaving cream.”
In conclusion, Mike said: “Coate’s shaving cream provides a nice shave and will appeal to those who enjoy the strong tea tree fragrance; however, I was disappointed to discover that it won’t reign supreme in my shaving rotation.”
So it seems that whilst Mike enjoyed shaving with the cream, he was not completely bowled over by it.
I wonder what Mike will think to our flagship cream, The Bluebeards Revenge, when he reviews it later this week.
