The Gentleman’s Shop, another fine retailer of men’s grooming products, announced they had acquired the Coates company back in May 2010.

And the re-introduction of this legendary shaving cream created a lot of buzz in the online wet shaving community as it was widely considered one of the best shaving creams ever produced.

Wet shaving guru Mantic even bought a tub of the ‘Coate’s Special Edition Tea Tree and Rosemary Shaving Cream’ and then posted a video review on YouTube last month.

He described the cream as “soft”, “very moist” with a “very pleasant scent”. Mantic praised the cream for its quality lather, adding that it’s “very slick” and ensures a “very nice and comfortable shave”.

So when we heard that Mike Sandoval, from Shaving101.com, wanted to test it out, we jumped at the chance to send him a tub.

But what did he think? “The packaging is slightly different from the old packaging, but it is nice and traditional,” he said.

Mike went on to praise the scent of the new Coate’s cream, describing it as “more pleasant because it is formulated with the mixture of tea tree and rosemary”.

“The cream itself is very soft and easy to lather. With only an almond-size amount of cream, I had no problem creating enough lather for a full shave,” Mike explained.

He added: “During the shave, the razor glided nicely along the skin and the Coate’s cream provided suitable protection. The formulation of the cream didn’t cause any sensitivity issues with my skin, and it rinsed away clean leaving a subtle amount of fragrance behind.

”Overall, Coate’s Tea Tree Limited Edition Shaving Cream was a quality cream, but I didn’t find it to be anything extraordinary compared to other shaving creams, such as Truefitt & Hill or Geo. F. Trumper’s.

”The cream didn’t moisturize better or lather better than any quality shaving cream.”

In conclusion, Mike said: “Coate’s shaving cream provides a nice shave and will appeal to those who enjoy the strong tea tree fragrance; however, I was disappointed to discover that it won’t reign supreme in my shaving rotation.”

So it seems that whilst Mike enjoyed shaving with the cream, he was not completely bowled over by it.

I wonder what Mike will think to our flagship cream, The Bluebeards Revenge, when he reviews it later this week.
